Christmas miracles

December 24, 2019 by Karen Comer 6 Comments

It’s a Christmas miracle
when the last-minute parcel
you ordered online
arrives on Christmas Eve.

It’s a Christmas miracle
when your wonky tree
seems to straighten itself
in time for the annual photo.

It’s a Christmas miracle
that your show-stopper of a dessert,
a concoction of chocolate and raspberries,
looks exactly like the recipe photo.

It’s a Christmas miracle
when you finish the final piece of work,
turn off the laptop
and declare you’re on holidays.

It’s Christmas miracle
when the belligerent teenagers
pick up the vacuum
without complaining.

It’s a Christmas miracle
there’s a brief moment alone
with a flickering flame
to stop and wonder.

It’s a Christmas miracle
when the tight-fisted relative
brings a plate to share
on Christmas Day.

It’s a Christmas miracle
when the tiny ones,
their faces lit up with joy and sugar,
fall asleep in the laps of the older ones.

It’s a Christmas miracle
when we find our place at the table –
worthy or not, belonging or not –
and feel a light to connect us all.

May your Christmas be filled with miracles!

Thank you for supporting my words this year. I’m taking a break for a few weeks, and will be back here in mid-January.

Karen x
